Do IEMs need burn-in?

Burn-in, or the practice of letting audio gear sit and play music for hours when new (without actually using them), is something some audiophiles swear by. But do IEMs actually need burn-in?

IEMs don’t need burn-in to produce their best sound, and what many audiophiles are experiencing when they burn in their gear is likely something called brain burn-in.

Whenever you buy new audio gear, you might not like the sound you’re hearing from the get-go. This is normal, as you’re hearing something new after being used to a particular sound signature and listening to the same set of headphones or IEMs for so long.

In the first few days of listening to your new IEMs, your brain will adjust to the new type of sound you’re hearing, slowly tune your ears to accept and appreciate these new sounds. When this happens, sounds that feel harsh or unsatisfying at first can later become more enjoyable.

It’s difficult to measure the ratio between brain burn-in or driver burn-in and their influence on a new IEM’s sound. What’s certain is that the IEMs we have featured in this collection deliver such a noticeable improvement over your old headphones or IEMs in terms of sound quality, having to burn them in won’t even cross your mind anymore.

Empire Ears Legend EVO IEM

empire ears legend evo front view

Price: $3,099.00

W9+ Subwoofers and ARC Technology brings brain-shaking bass power that you can enjoy for years to come

The Empire Ears Legend EVO is an incredible bass-heavy IEM in the $3000 or more price range. Packed with incredible W9+ subwoofer drivers, Weapon X Bone Conduction Drivers, and ARC Resonance Mitigation Technology, the Legend EVO produces brain-shaking bass power with scalpel-like precision.

The bass is easily the best part of the Legend EVO. Dual W9+ subwoofers deliver effortless sub-bass rumbles and an authoritative slam to every bass note. Kick drums sound full, and you can feel each visceral bass kick on your head. Bass guitars rumble and vibrate with lots of texture, allowing you to hear every note with clarity.

Bass-heavy sets typically suffer from a muddy midrange - that is not the case here. The separation between the bass and midrange is outstanding on the Legend EVO, which allows it to produce that incredible bass while keeping vocals and instruments clear and detailed. You can easily pick out sounds like voices and guitars in the mix and hear details like string slides and taps effortlessly.

The treble is well done on the Legend EVO IEM, offering effortless extension without sounding harsh. The Bone Conduction drivers work wonders here, adding enough air and sparkle to make your music feel spacious and detailed.

Comfort and fit depend on your ear size. The Legend EVO is a chunky IEM, which means you’ll struggle with fit if you have smaller ears. With that said, the shells are well-built and look great with their sleek black translucent paint.

What Empire Ears has done with the Legend EVO is nothing short of spectacular. Those dual subwoofer drivers deliver game-changing bass quality and quantity that will satisfy demanding bass heads and audiophiles alike.

FiR Audio Radon 6 IEM

FiR Audio Radon 6 front view

Price: $3,299.00

Kinetic Bass lets you feel and hear the bass for an immersive sound experience

The FiR Audio Radon 6 has all the makings of a true endgame IEM. This limited edition IEM from FiR Audio packs cutting-edge features such as Kinetic Bass, ATOM Venting, and Open Acoustics to give you that next-level gaming experience.

Under those stunning black shells and black/gold faceplates is a six-driver setup with one 10mm dynamic driver for the bass, four BA drivers for the midrange, and an Electrostatic Driver for the high frequencies.

That 10mm dynamic driver is worth highlighting because the sound it produces is fed through the RN6’s nozzles and the Kinetic Bass port at the back of the shells. The Kinetic Bass port unlocks a new dimension of sound and feel, allowing you to hear and feel the bass on the Radon 6.

Speaking of bass, the RN6’s bass is nothing short of extraordinary. The bass here is visceral, authoritative, and impactful all at the same time. You can hear each vibration very clearly in bass guitar passages, while kick drums sound punchy and tight. The speed of the RN6’s bass is incredible as well, able to keep up fast-paced music with relative ease.

The midrange on the Radon 6 is exceptionally tuned, offering a natural and accurate reproduction of voices and instruments. Male and female vocals sound clear and energetic, with just enough thickness to make voices sound powerful and weighty. Instruments like acoustic guitars are rendered with really good tone and detail for a more life-like sound.

The treble on the RN6 is well-extended, offering a good balance between excitement and refinement. High-frequency sounds like cymbals and strings are rendered with very good clarity and texture, which helps extend the sense of space and soundstage you get from your music.

It's no secret that the RN6 sounds incredible for music, but what about gaming?

For gaming, the RN6 offers a combination of immersion and excitement you just won’t get with other in-ear monitors in this price range. The Radon 6 IEM’s adaptable soundstage renders a realistic 3D-like environment where sounds come from around your head at any given time. Its powerful and physical bass lets you enjoy in-game sound effects with enhanced energy and excitement, making every gaming session more enjoyable.

You won’t have problems wearing the FiR Audio RN6 for extended periods as well, making it a great IEM for those long music listening or gaming sessions. The shells are well-built and relatively small for what they are. Fit comes easy even if you have small ears, and ATOM Venting tech helps with comfort by ensuring you never feel pressure in your ears.

Overall, the FiR Audio Radon 6 delivers an immersive listening experience like no other. With its bass you can hear and feel, wonderful tuning, and comfortable build, you can enjoy music listening sessions and gaming sessions with enhanced immersion and excitement.

IEM for Mixing for $3000 or more

Noble Audio Ronin IEM

noble audio ronin front view on white background

Price: $3,900.00

Its flat and accurate sound signature makes the Ronin the perfect IEM for studio mixing work

The Noble Audio Ronin’s precise and balanced sound makes it a serious tool for studio production or audio mixing work.

The hallmark trait of the Noble Audio Ronin is its impressively balanced and linear sound signature, which it achieves by utilizing four Sonion BA drivers for the bass, four Knowles BA drivers for the midrange, and four Electrostatic Drivers for the high frequencies.

The bass on the Ronin is tight, punchy, and very detailed. There is a very defined separation between the sub-bass and midbass, which makes bass notes sound dynamic and detailed. When needed, the Ronin can produce rumbles with defined textures and vibrations. Overall, the bass of the Ronin is quick, tight, and textured - a true studio-reference bass presentation that works well for detailed listening in the studio.

The midrange is where the Ronin IEM shines, offering incredible tonal balance, clarity, and detail. Vocals are eye-opening on the Ronin. Male and female vocals are reproduced with studio-reference accuracy and are incredibly immersive on the Ronin, so much so that you feel like you’re in the music itself.

The treble is well-extended, airy, and sparkly on the Noble Audio Ronin. Cymbal strikes sound crisp and detailed, while strings and other high-frequency sounds are rendered with a life-like tone. The extra treble emphasis helps create a sense of space between sounds, so instruments and vocals never sound congested.

Fit and comfort are where you might face some challenges with the Noble Ronin. These IEMs are big, which can make fit a bit of an issue if you have small ears. You’ll need to experiment with various ear tips to find the right seal and fit with the Ronin. That said, the Ronin’s shape is ergonomic and should feel comfortable once you find the right fit.

Build quality is exceptional. The Ronin’s shells are smooth and well-built with no weird burrs or sharp edges to speak of. The faceplates are stunning with those black/blue shard aesthetics. To round out the Ronin’s aesthetics, you get a special cable from Eletech called the Ronin Cable which perfectly matches the Ronin IEM’s blue and black aesthetics.

The Noble Audio Ronin’s accurate studio-reference sound, great build quality, and stunning aesthetics are something audiophiles and professionals will truly enjoy.

Price: $2,999.00

Finding a top-of-the-line set of IEMs that can fit small ears can be challenging, but with the FiR Audio Krypton 5, you can enjoy a truly high-end sound in absolute comfort and style.

The FiR Audio Krypton 5 is a five-driver hybrid IEM that’s part of FiR Audio’s Frontier Series IEMs. You get the same cutting-edge features as its bigger brothers, the Radon 6 and Xenon 6:

Kinetic Bass, ATOM Venting, Open Acoustics, and Rigid Tech. These technologies combine to give the KR5 bass that you can feel alongside enhanced comfort and durability.

Powering the KR5s is a 10mm Kinetic Bass Dynamic Driver, three OpenDriver BA drivers for the bass and mids, and an OpenDriver BA for the high frequencies. These drivers combine to produce a smooth and detailed sound that’s perfect for just about any genre.

The 10mm Kinetic Bass driver does wonders for the Krypton 5’s bass. There’s a ton of power on tap, so sub-bass rumbles are easy to come by. The bass here is well-tuned as well, offering a good combination of sub-bass rumble and midbass punch without sounding bloated or boomy. With Kinetic Bass tech, you can hear and feel the bass at the same time, which makes for a very immersive bass experience.

The midrange and treble on the KR5 IEM are smooth and detailed. The low-end boost from the powerful dynamic driver gives male vocals a thicker and more weighty sound. Instruments and female vocals are rendered with wonderful clarity and smoothness. The treble on the KR5 is crisp and clear. You can hear a ton of detail and sparkle in music, but cymbals and other high-frequency sounds never come across as harsh or sharp.

So the KR5 is an incredible-sounding IEM, but what about fit and comfort? You’ll be happy to know the KR5 delivers on its promise of comfort as well. Its relatively small shells are easy to wear even if you have smaller ears, and the longer nozzles help secure the IEMs in your ears for enhanced fit and noise isolation.
